Ron Mueck

March 5, 2010 by

Right now at the Portland Art Museum there is a real life Ron Mueck sculpture. Ron Mueck creates larger then life and smaller then life realistic looking figures. His work is so real looking that I felt like the piece I was looking at was going to start moving.

This sculpture is entitled Boy Crouching In Mirror. 1999/2002 mixed media Boy 43.2×45.7x28cm

Here is a boring video/slideshow of his work.

Here is a funny British narration of his process

Jaw-dropping good…Inspiring. Lois is a phenomenal artist, an animator, and everything that I want to be some day. She’s my age. How did she get there?

I love her color schemes, line work, textures and stylization of character. What is also wonderful about this artist is that she isn’t afraid to share her technique and offers helpful tips in her blog. Looks like a lot of her work is done digitally, and it seems we share a common source of influence: Alfonse Mucha.

I have a lot to learn from this artist :)

This guy’s work is remarkable, and his aim to bring awareness to the environmental condition is inspirational;  a message that I am continually trying to expound upon through my own work.

This piece can be found under the paintings section on his site.  It is titled “Drifting” — 30×40″ acrylic on panel, 2009.

Walton Ford’s work is comic, bizarre, grotesque, and dreamy. The research he does before he creates an image is an art-form in itself. I highly recommend reading about him on Art:21 and watching the video on his process and work.

fernworksI came across this artist on the Crafty Wonderland site: http://www.fernworks.org/paintings6.html

…Check out the paintings. I love the established depth with the layers of resin.  I’d love to try something like this…

And if you don’t know about Crafty Wonderland, it’s another gem of Portland’s art scene…Second Sunday of every month, located at the Doug Fir, features local artists and crafts. http://www.craftywonderland.com/

amySolThis artist induces that internal “Awwww” effect when I look at her work; brings me back to my childhood. Just wanted to share…Love her color schemes and the way she brings out the pattern of the wood in her work.

A good friend of mine once said, in reference to a piece of art, “I think it’s possible that two or more people could have the same thought and create almost the same piece of art at about the same time.” Do you think that it is possible? Here are two artists Kill Pixie and Laylah Ali that I feel have very similar work. There are links to look at more of their work.

*SKINNER*

May 15, 2009 by

Fifty 24 gallery in Portland (Upper Playground) is exhibiting Shadows of the Unrealm, the art of Skinner. The paintings and instillations in this show remind me of watching He-Man cartoons when I was little. The figures in the paintings seem to resemble mid-evil type warriors and religious figures mixed with some real photos and graphic images from the 80′s. Skinner has a way of merging the grotesque with globs of color and sparkles… I love colorful sparkly throw up don’t you?

Mandy Greer has an instillation up right now in the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland entitled Dare alla Luce. The work is beautifully stitched globbs of fabric hanging overhead. The whole instillation reminded me of walking through a swamp. The show runs through May 31st, check it out if you get a chance and let me know what you think.

Here she talks a little bit about her process

William Kentridge

For me Spring break 09′ was filled with basking in the sun in San Francisco, eating great food, riding bikes around Oakland, and seeing this amazing exhibit at the SF MOMA. Every time I am in SF I have to stop at the MOMA and I always see some amazing works of art. Before I viewed William Kentridge’s work and not knowing what I was about to see, I had a lengthy conversation about video and how a lot of video artist limit themselves to a square space. This body of work plays on breaking the constraints of a viewing box in 2D form and creating a 3D world for his video to play out. Mr. Kentridge brings video, animation, theater, and robotics together to form his exhibition Five Themes.
